As your child develops, their dental needs will also change. One of the best ways to ensure your baby, toddler, adolescent, or teenager continues to have beautiful and healthy teeth is to provide them with the tools they need at home to follow a proper dental hygiene routine. These tools include the right toothbrush and toothpaste for their age and needs.
Here are a few tips to help you pick the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your kids, no matter their age.
Choosing a Toothbrush and Toothpaste for Your Baby
You should start brushing your baby's teeth from the minute their first tooth erupts, which typically occurs around the time they turn six-months old. Your dentist will recommend the best tool to remove any formula, baby food, and bacteria from your baby's teeth and gums.
Baby toothbrushes should feature fewer rows of soft bristles than an adult toothbrush. Finger toothbrushes are also an option. Otherwise, you can use a piece of gauze or washcloth dampened with plain water to wash your baby's teeth and gums.
Ask your dentist about toothpaste, including when to begin using it and which brand is best. Your dentist may recommend using a very small amount of toothpaste when your baby is as young as six-months-old. When you do start using toothpaste, make sure to thoroughly rinse your baby's mouth afterwards.
As your baby gets older, more curious, and unwilling to sit quietly while you brush their teeth, let them try grabbing the toothbrush and cleaning their own teeth. This will help them get more comfortable with the toothbrush and, eventually, you will be able to resume brushing their teeth properly.
Be gentle when brushing your baby's teeth because their gums are sensitive during teething. If one product is causing discomfort, such as a finger brush, switch to a different method.
Choosing a Toothbrush and Toothpaste for Your Toddler
After two years of age, switch to a toothbrush and toothpaste that are specifically designed for use on toddlers. These toothbrushes are still smaller and typically feature soft bristles. Toddler toothpaste is also available in a variety of flavors, so choose one based on your child's preference.
Unfortunately, the biggest battle with toddlers is getting them to sit still long enough for you to brush their teeth. To keep your toddler interested, allow your toddler to pick out their own toothbrush, such as those that feature their favorite animal or character. Creating a fun brushing routine will also help make them more enthusiastic. Give your child a new toothbrush every few months, or more often if your toddler is chewing on the brush.
Choosing a Toothbrush and Toothpaste for Your Adolescent or Teenager
By the time your little one is an adolescent or teenager, chances are they won't care about the print or type of toothpaste you offer. But you should still try to get your older child involved in their oral health now to ensure they continue to care about their teeth and gums long after they leave your home. Ask them to choose a new toothbrush based upon the bristle's style (such as dome shaped or ribbed), the toothbrush head shape, and the toothbrush handle grip.
Your older child might also be interested in transitioning to an electric toothbrush. Several tooth brush options are available to choose from, so let your child determine which style they want. As the parent, consider whether your older child can remember to charge their electric toothbrush or if it is better to give them a model that features batteries. Travel electric toothbrushes are a great option if your adolescent or teenager participates in a lot of after school activities that require travel.
